"Her Royal Highness the Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, was safely delivered of a Prince at 9:14 p.m. today. Her Royal Highness and her son are both doing well."

"A son who may one day be King of England was born to Princess Elizabeth last night in her room at Buckingham Palace. The mother and her son are doing well and all of Britain is rejoicing.
Like his mother, the baby Prince of Edinburgh is now an heir presumptive to the throne and he is the second in succession, displacing his aunt, Princess Margaret, who becomes third."

When the news was announced a great roar was heard from the crowd outside Buckingham Palace. Many sang "For he's a Jolly Good Fellow," in honor of the new prince's father, the Duke of Edinburgh.

Inside the Palace, the new father wet the baby's head with bottles of champagne, and the family, the doctors, and the palace staff all drank to the "health of the new prince."

The crowd shouted: We want Philip. We want George." One policeman quipped: "I suppose you want the Princess to come out on the balcony with the baby in her arms."
No name has been announced for the new prince.
