A whirlwind day for the future Princess of Monaco

January 6, 1956

Grace Kelly got up early today to "take a singing lesson," reports the New York Times.  Her fiance, Prince Rainier III, arrived at her eleven-room Fifth Avenue apartment, "overlooking Central Park," for a private lunch.  Later this afternoon,  several of Miss Kelly's friends were invited to her apartment to meet her future husband.

The newly engaged couple's first public appearance together in this country took place at a benefit called "the Imperial Ball -- a Night in Monte Carlo," at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

This was no ordinary day "in the life of an American girl," but Miss Kelly kept her emotions in check, and this day "did not seem to fluster the coolly dignified girl from Philadelphia.

In the entertainment world, Miss Kelly is often referred to as "Her Grace."  After her marriage to the 32-year-old ruler of Monaco, an eight square mile principality with 2,300 citizens and 21, 000 residents,  she will be styled as Her Serene Highness.

Miss Kelly "rose to the peak of success in motion pictures with record-breaking rapidity."  Last year, she received an Oscar for her performance in "Country Girl."

Neither a date nor a place for the wedding has been announced, but the residents of Monaco "demanded" today that the marriage between their Sovereign Prince and Miss Kelly take place in Monaco.

Miss Kelly will be the second American to wed a Prince of Monaco.  Rainier's great-grandfather, Albert's second wife was Mary Alice Heine of New Orleans.  They were married in 1889.
